Pyeongchang (Korean pronunciation: [p?j??t??a?]; in full, Pyeongchang-gun [p?j??t??a??un]; English: ) is a county in Gangwon Province of South Korea located in the Taebaek Mountains region. It is home to several Buddhist temples, including Woljeongsa. It is approximately 180 km (110 mi) east southeast of Seoul, the capital of South Korea. Pyeongchang will host the 2018 Winter Olympics and the 2018 Winter Paralympics. High-speed rail opened from December 22, 2017 for the 2018 Olympic games.

Pyeongchang's slogan, 'Happy700 Pyeongchang', is taken from the its average elevation of approximately 700 metres (2,300 ft).

History

Pyeongchang region was ruled by Goguryeo Dynasty during Three Kingdoms period, and it was called Ukohyeon (???). After Silla collapsed Goguryeo and Baekje, it was renamed Baekohyeon (???).

After Goryeo was established and 10-provincial system was enforced, North of Pyeongchang region was involved in Sakbang-do, and south of the region was involved in Yangwang-do. Then, it was controlled by Wonju. New local system was carried out during Hyeongjong period, east of the region was involved in Dongyeo, rest of it was included in Yanggwangdo. An administrator for the region was sent for the central government, and it became independent from Wonju.

After Joseon was founded and the territory was divided into 8 Provinces, the region was involved in Gangwon-do. After 23-district system enforced in 1895, it was included in Choongju-bu. 13-provincial system enacted in 1896, it was involved in Gangwon-do.

Geography

The altitude of Pyeongchang is wide-ranging, with 84% of its territory comprising mountains with average elevations of 750 m (2,460 ft).

Its best-known place, the township of Daegwallyeong-myeon, averages between 700 to 800 m (2,300 to 2,600 ft) above sea level, with some areas over 1,000 m (3,300 ft) high.

Climate

Pyeongchang County experiences a warm-summer humid continental climate (Köppen climate classification: Dwb). During the winter, Siberian cold air masses pass through the Korean peninsula, causing extremely cold conditions in Pyeongchang. Winters are long and very snowy.

Regional northeast winds bring plenty of precipitation throughout the entire year, especially in the summer. During the winter, when northeast winds blow from the East Sea, severe snow storms result.

The warmest months of the year are July and August, with January and February being the coldest.

Cultural Heritages

On Pyeongchang, 16 Cultural Heritages was registered by South Korea Government and 45 Heritages was registered by Gangwon Provincial Office.

Sangwansa is Temple on the Odaesan, which was established as Jinyeowon in 705. Although Joseon royal court used policy of prohibiting buddhism, House of Joseon donated to rebuliding or additional constructing for temple. On 1401, Taejong of Joseon donated to construction Sajaam. On 1465, Sejo of Joseon and bureaucrat donated to rebuliding Sanwonsa . Yejong of Joseon designated that temple as memorial for Sejo. Third Battle of Seoul during Korean War , United Nations Command order to burn Temple, buddhist monk repulsed it. As a result, they agreed to burn doors of Temple. .

Woljeongsa is Temple on the Odaesan, which was established by Jajang in 643. After Established, consistently additional construction. During Third Battle of Seoul, 10 building was totally destroyed by fire. Tanheo reconstructed Jeokgwangjeon on 1964 and manhwa cosinstently reconstructed other buildings.

Woljeongsa has following cultural assets.

Historic Site
  • Pyeongchang Odaesan Historic Archive(Historic Site No. 37) was one of five storages on the latter period of Joseon Dynasty for Annals of the Joseon Dynasty and Sonwon-kyebo-kiryak.

Tourism

The area is popular with mountain hikers, especially at the southern part of Mount Seoraksan.

The county is the home of two major ski resorts which will be the home of the 2018 Winter Olympics. Alpensia ski resort has six slopes for skiing and snowboarding, with runs up to 1,400.0 m (4,593.2 ft) long, for beginners and advanced skiers, and an area reserved for snowboarders. The resort is open year-round. Alpensia will host the majority of the snow events of the Olympics. Intercontinental & holiday inn hotels opened Yongpyong Resort, which is the largest ski resort in Korea with 31 slopes will host the technical alpine skiing events.

Alpensia will be the focus of the 2018 Cultural Olympiad, with a new, purpose-built concert hall within the resort with indoor water park.

A 250.0 kilometres per hour (155.3 mph) KTX line New line from Wonju to Pyeongchang and Jinbu KTX station Alpensia & Yongpyeong resort named Gyeonggang Line will be built between Wonju and Gangneung via Pyeongchang for the 2018 Winter Olympics and will put Pyeongchang within 80 minutes of travel time from Seoul, New KTX started commercial operation since Dec. 22, 2017. It takes 1 and half hours from Cheongryangri KTX station (NE Seoul) as well as Seoul station of Gyeonggang high speed rail.

Buddhist temple Woljeongsa of the Jogye Order of Korean Buddhism is located on the eastern slopes of Odaesan.

The Lee Seung-bok Memorial Center is located in Nodong-ri, Yongpyeong-myeon.

Samyang Ranch is the largest highlands farm in Asia located on the hills of Daegwallyeong 850 to 1,470 meters above sea level. It was operated as a petting zoo and enjoy the pastoral landscape. Samyang highland ranch is operated by the leading Korean food and dairy company of Samyang food, Samyang food company is the first company to introduce ramyeon instant noodle in the poverty-ridden South Korea in 1960s. It is the filming location of the drama Autumn in my Heart and the movie Lover's Concerto.

Sport

Pyeongchang hosted the 2013 Special Olympics World Winter Games. The 2018 Winter Olympic Games are currently being held in Pyeongchang. The 2009 IBU Biathlon World Championships were also held there.

2018 Winter Olympic Games

On 6 July 2011, Pyeongchang was announced to host the 2018 Winter Olympics and the 2018 Winter Paralympics. The other candidates were Annecy, France and Munich, Germany. It will be the third Winter Games in Asia after the 1972 games in Sapporo, Japan and the 1998 games in Nagano, Japan. It will also be the first Asian locality to host the Winter Games outside Japan. Pyeongchang won their 2018 bid after two previous failed attempts for the 2010 and 2014 Winter Olympics, in which it lost to Vancouver, Canada, and Sochi, Russia, respectively.

For the 2018 Olympics, Pyeongchang is being marketed with the CamelCase spelling of "PyeongChang" so a worldwide audience does not confuse it with Pyongyang, the capital of neighboring North Korea.

Olympic venues and Dream Program

In preparation for the 2018 Olympics, the region has built facilities including hotels and a world-class ski resort, named Alpensia.

The region is implementing its so-called 2018 Dream Program, a legacy of the 2010 bid. It has mounted its fifth sports and cultural program, involving 123 participants from 31 countries, who were invited because they live where there is no snowfall and have no opportunity to participate in winter sports.

Transport

Pyeongchang County is traversed from west to east by the Gyeonggang Line and Yeongdong Expressway. The railway and expressway both originate in the Seoul metropolitan region.

Rail

The Gyeonggang Line passes through Pyeongchang from west to east, providing main-line rail service. The national high-speed rail service, KTX, stops at Pyeongchang Station and Jinbu Station. During the 2018 Winter Olympics, KTX will run increased service to Jinbu Station, which will revert to become an on-call stop after the events conclude.

Buses

Intercity Buses

Pyeongchang Bus Terminal and Jangpyeong Bus Terminal, Jinbu Bus Station are the main intercity bus terminals of the county. Daehwa Bus Station and Hoenggye Bus Station are also served by intercity buses.

Transit buses

Local transit operators connect communities in the county to hubs at Pyeongchang Bus Station, Jangpyeong Bus Terminal, and Jinbu Bus Station.

Road

Expressways

Youngdong Expressway passes through Pyeongchang from west to east.

National highways

Pyeongchang County is traversed from west to east by National Routes 6 and 42; National Routes 31 and 59 pass through from north to south.
